How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

It is a well-known fact that Nigerians love to show off, and GSM has given most another avenue to do just that. I see people spend N50,000 on a mobile which they use for nothing else but voice calls and SMS once in a while.

All over the world, people are taking advantage of GSM technology to be more productive: Web browsing, email access, mobile banking, mobile payments, and much more. People are more productive, work more efficiently and make good money off their mobiles.

This is a poll of what members of this forum do with their mobiles. Who wants to go first? Tell us how productive your mobile line and handset are for you.

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

Nice poll. I would like to hear what the others have also got to say.

Here I go:
I use virtually all the features available on my phone. I use it as a PIM: Birthday Reminders, Lecture Schedule, Regular Appointments, ... I use it for storing little notes. My phone memory for contacts is virtually full. I use the mobile internet feature - and regularly too; MMS, text messaging, sms email, sms alerts, gaming, applications and of course voice calls. I think I'm even overusing it. I already thinking of an upgrade.

So what are the rest of you using your mobile for?

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

well i use my phone alot, that's for sure. i own a nokia 1100. and i can always be seen clicking away at my phones. ask my peeps they'll tell u my phone is like my main buddy. no wonder when my first phone a nokia 3410 spoilt my mum was like i deserved it for over using the phone.

well i use my 1100 alot. mainly for text messaging. make a few calls and only if really necesarry. besides i got my NITEL landline at home for making calls, and it's much cheaper to do so from a call center. i don't think my phone can surf the net...yeah, it definately can't. but i use the reminder furure alot to store info and ideas which come to mind at any point of the day and need to be stored so as not to be forgotten. but i don't play much games on my phones...guess the games on the 1100 are pretty fucked. the 3410 had better games. and my phone memory ain't too full. probably cos i don't collect number's of every tom dick and harry as some people do or cos i ain't too popular or involved in too many bussiness deals. peeps on my phone book are my real close buddies that i can even ring up by 2am to talk to. that's about it for me.

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

I just bought Sagem Myx-5m and a new glo line, i hope to start enjoying the set when i get the wap activated, but meanwhile am using the alarm, play the game when am bored (Megabox conquest my favourite), also enjoy using the speaker when making a conference call home with my younger ones, it also brightens up my room when NEPA fails as usual, i know its not the best set in the market, but the set is just like my baby cos its my first colour phone. Looking forward to downloading ringtones from wapsites. Anyone ever done that with a Sagem Myx-5m? Pls let me know if it works.

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

Well, my turn. I never buy any phone for any reasoin other than functionality.

My P800 was my mobile PC and primary access to the internet; for accessing office and personal mails, uploading and managing websites, online banking and purchases, domain name registration, and hosting account management.

I also had my Bible on it, so it was both Bible and mobile pulpit. My congregation is probably the only one for hundreds of miles whose pastor preaches with a PDA-phone.

Then, I use it for other simpler things like appointments et al.

I am looking forward to keeping up this tradition when my 9300 arrives in a couple of days.

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

I use the Nokia 3310 phone and apart from sending SMS,making and recieving calls on it( those are the primary uses of a phone right?  smile), I also make use of the alarm, reminder and sometimes the calculator. Oh there is the Space impact and snake 11 games which i enjoy playing. When i start getting tired of the look of the phone i simply change the cover and believe me the phone is as old as when GSM started in Nigeria-it's still working perfectly well.

I hope nobody out there would crucify me for saying this  roll - if I want to take pictures, i'd get a digital camera, i could never use a phone to check emails and browse the internet, screen is too small, so i have my good old laptop, who cares about picture messaging, MMS when i can only send it to people that has phones that support that feature and so on............Call me old fashioned and whatever but i dont need an all-in-one phone, thank you!

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

@patricia: No-one can rightly criticize you over your choices, since they are not in your shoes.

For example, while I am not particularly crazy about cameras on phones, I can see how it can come in handy for those special, on-the-spur moments people want to keep on record. With my lifestyle, a laptop is a burden, so I opt for communicators/smartphones. It depends on each individual's needs.

The important thing is: don't buy what you don't need. Looks to me like you are maximizing your 3310, and in my books you score high big_smile

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

@patricia,

There is no need to feel somehow about your choice. I agree perfectly with your attitude towards the mobile phones.

Functionality is the keyword. I used my 3310 too till it was given a merciful termination by a thief, in fact, my friends shouted halleluyah when they heard.

If I have my way, I won't use more than Nokia 6210.

Camera phone et al is for "posing" by most buyers.

No apologies ja re

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

Let's get the focus of this thread right.

My point simply is, buy devices commensurate with the functionality you need.

I don't care for a camera on a phone much personally, but I have a wife and kids - and there comes up one of those unexpected and unforgettable moments of warmth, fun, joy or whatever that you just want to record down. My superb digital camera is at home and those moments would simply be gone and remain nothing but memories. Believe me when I say that at those moments I thank God for the camera on my phone.

If you buy a phone with extra features, what do you have to lose using those features? smile If you are sure you don't need such extras, buy a simpler phone without them.

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

I use a nokia 1100, and you bet I virtually use everything in its menu: from the messages(most regular), to contacts where i usually like to assign tones and speed dials, to tones where i like to so often change my ringtone. Alarm is most useful to me, as well as reminders , i use the reminder till it is full!

I also play the game when I am bored and compose ringtones if i have got a new one i like. The calculator is something I rarely use cos it is sorta cumbersome for me.
The greatest of all I guess is the Flashlight. If i don't use it early in the morning to dress up, I am using it in the evening, thanks to Nepa!

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

I would love to use the timer on my phone, but it's just too cumbersome.  I would love to use it to time my cooking, because I burn food a lot.  I just can't get myself to sit down in the kitchen doing nothing but waiting for food to be ready.  The kitchen happens to be a staircase and two rooms away; you can't smell your food until it's completely burnt!

Re: How many of you Really Put Your Mobiles to More Productive Use?

Some of these phone companies just trick people into buying phones that cannot function properly in Nigeria.  I have an E-700 Samsung and cannot even download ringtones or wallpaper!  The infra red can only transfer the phonebook and you can't store a face to a particular name. The camera is cool anyway and has prevented me from getting a digital camera. The calc comes in handy all the time including the scheduler, organiser and conversion table. Looking for a more functional phone.

If you're looking for a more functional phone, i'll suggest you go for Sonyericsson k700, k500 or Siemens S65.

That is no trick. Those are issues peculiar to the phone. It was designed not to be able to do those things.

A little extra research on your part before buying would have revealed that.

Before I purchase a phone, I find out to the tiniest detail what it can, and what it cannot, do. I make no assumptions.

For example, infrared on a Samsung or Nokia is not as versatile/functional as on a Siemens or SE. The former usually deliberately restrict what you can do with infrared.

Tip: Always do your homework smile

www.gsmarena.com is a good place for statistics/specifications. Note that specifications alone do not say much about how well the phone functions.

Good sites for user reviews include:
1. http://mobile-review.com/review-en.shtml
2. http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk (for Smartphones)
3. http://imobile.com.au/phonereviews
4. http://mobileburn.com
5. http://my-symbian.com (for Symbian smartphones)

These 5 sites give you detailed insight into the actual performance of phones. There are others, but these are very good.
