Hello dd4real,
Sending SMS to GSM networks in Nigeria can be tricky. It depends on the network.
For people on the glo network (+234805), you can send an email to 234805XXXXXXX@sms.gloworld.com, and the content of your email will be delivered via SMS (the receiver pays)
You can use Clickatell to send SMS messages to MTN, Vmobile, and Glo. Last time I checked, they could not deliver to NITEL handsets. GSM-text is a Nigerian company that specializes in delivering to SMS to Nigerian handsets.
Hope this helps. Feel free to clarify your question if the need arises.

there are dozens of site for sending sms to Nigerian mobiles. but the question is: ARE THEY FREE? and the answer 99% of the time is no. most people who open sites have to eat too so after a period of the freebie thing they go commercial. but i did actually send sms to myself and to a pal from the net once and it was free. that was about 6 months ago. on one occasion i think teh site i used was www.myportal.com...not to sure sha.
but if anyone knows any free site abeg tell me. i'm dying to send free texts. MTN don tighten things no more exploiting them with free text, and i ain't got Glo.

On the issue of free text messaging, there's no such thing as free beer and text messaging is not free anyway you see it. Even those sites that give free text have someone who's paying for the text messages (usually advertisers).
Now I used to think... "why can't text messaging be free?" The reason is that it costs money to terminate sms to operators. I've been involved with bulk SMS for over three years and I was involved in the development and deployment of ChoiceSMS. Entreprenuers and businessmen are always looking for the best deals in the market. In the bulk sms market, the best deals would involve issues like latency, features and cost. We are always looking for the best deals in the market and at many instances, we've learnt that the fact that you're getting bulk sms for cheap rates doesn't mean you're getting good service. Please visit http://www.csoft.co.uk/sms/delivery_prices.htm
Now bulk sms providers have to negotiate with operators to get good rates for sms termination or origination and this involves money! Depending on volume and your negotiation skills, you can get good deals but note that it's usually never free. So it does cost something to send text messages.
My 20 kobo.

The ONLY Free Web-SMS I know is the one from GTB PLC www.gtbplc.com You have to register first and have a GSM phone. You are supposed to get 3 free SMS daily but they give only 2 these days. And the service seems to be epileptic these days too. Go for it! ![]()

dd4Real, it would appear that most of those who were kind enough to reply your query got the question totally wrong. For starters, I believe you're not in Nigeria. I also believe you want to know if you can text people in Naija from a site. Well the answer is simply YES!!! To any network at that. I haven't tried that many sites but I currently use www.sms.ac
You get free 5 sms a day to any network in Nigeria, (I believe anywhere else for that matter) thereafter it's 25p (for those in London or UK) a text. My folks are on different networks from MTN to Glo and Econet and I text them every single day. Comprendre?
